Reinventing Acapulco

Formerly a playground for the rich and famous, where stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra vacationed in the 1950s, Acapulco seemed to lose its luster in recent decades. In an attempt to "show the world how glamorous it can be," according to Piquis Rochin, director of international promotions for Acapulco Destination Marketing Office, Acapulco is attempting to make a comeback as a luxury destination. There are several new swanky hotels, multimillion-dollar renovation projects and a host of new restaurants and boutiques.

Acapulco Reaches Forward

It's late evening at Ciro's, the open-air rooftop nightclub of Hotel Casablanca, high above Santa Lucia Bay. A woman and a handsome dark-haired man are dancing -- movie stars, perhaps. The music is "Perfidia," the romantic Latin song of betrayal. Before them, a ship cruises into the vast bay, its lights glittering on the water.

House Hunting in Mexico

This 850-square-meter (9,149-square-foot) house, built in 1995 in Mexican and Mediterranean architectural styles, has sweeping ocean views, several outdoor sitting areas, a swimming pool and a wraparound balcony with a hot tub. The house is called Casa Luna Gorda — literally translated as, “Fat Moon House,” though it has a metaphorical meaning of “expectant” moon.

Cruises Added from San Diego to Acapulco

SAN DIEGO - Royal Caribbean International's ship Radiance of the Seas will offer seasonal cruises from San Diego to Mexico, beginning later this month, it was announced on Friday.The 2,500-passenger vessel will have 29 round-trip cruises from San Diego starting Sept. 25 through May, ranging from four-to 12-night itineraries, to the Mexican Riviera including, Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, Huatulco, Ixtapa, Manzanillo, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, according to the Port of San Diego.

Acapulco Wedding Moons

Retirement on the Mexican Riviera

Riviera! The word alone tends to conjure pleasant images of beautiful scenery, of calm serenity or relaxation, even of Paradise. By definition, Riviera is an Italian term originally from the Middle Ages for the coast of Liguria. The two divisions of the original Riviera, both of which border the Ligurian Sea, an arm of the Mediterranean Sea, are the Italian Riviera and the French Riviera. Retirement on either Riviera would be wonderful if you have seriously deep pockets, don't mind the 10 hour transatlantic flight, and the possible language barrier when you're there!

In Acapulco, a Return to Glamour

IT was a balmy evening in Acapulco, and up and down the town’s main drag, the college party crowd was again on its nightly pub crawl, belting out one too many Jimmy Buffett tunes and guzzling a few too many Coronas. Nearby, the famous La Quebrada cliff divers had finished the evening’s last show, sending moms and dads to Planet Hollywood to keep their antsy kids distracted, as two hulking cruise ships sat towering on the waterfront.
